hey all! we've seen a bunch of reports of image uploads hanging forever over the past day, and we're starting to look into it.
so far we're confident of the following things:
- the issue is real and we can reproduce it in-house.
- it began occurring in the late evening UTC on the 20th. (edit: wording changed from "just before midnight UTC on the 21st" because talking about the midnight of a particular day is confusing.)
- it does appear to occur more often with larger image files -- the comments in this thread about the size threshold being 500kb sound right, but we haven't spent much time reproducing this yet.
- it isn't related to a code or operational change, because we haven't made any of those to any part of the site related to image upload.
- we've put in a support ticket with the company we buy the underlying file hosting service from.
we'll let you know more once we track it down and get it fixed. thanks as always for using cohost, and thanks for your patience during a very busy week.
we can't reproduce the issue any more, upload error rates have returned to normal on our dashboards, and our cloud provider confirms that they were experiencing an internal issue -- a code change causing incoming requests' content to be buffered in an unintended place, causing a bottleneck -- which sounds like a credible root cause for the behavior we were seeing and was resolved within the same hour.
please let us know if you're continuing to have problems with attachment uploads.
