I occasionally write long posts but you should assume I'm talking out of my ass until proved otherwise. I do like writing shit sometimes.

50/50 chance of suit pictures end up here or on the Art Directory account. Good luck.

Be 18+ or be gone you kids act fuckin' weird.

I tag all of my posts complaining about stuff #complaining, feel free to muffle that if you'd like a more positive cohost experience.

I was thinking of how cool it'd be to show up to a place once a week or a month and be able to just do a bunch of local network file copies with other folk

... so what do you show up with? Obviously it's still disks, because they're cheap, but now we just want maybe two mirrored drives. Separate external USB enclosures perhaps? But then we'd need extra power too. 2.5" drives, even mechanicals, get expensive quick.

We could do just a single drive with copies=2 in ZFS, but that's a bit much when we still want to be able to copy data on as fast as reasonably possible.

And, external USB adapters capable of doing SAS are hella expensive. But having a couple of whitelabel SATA drives is probably ok just for sneakernet duties. Perhaps a 3 way mirror would be better. Plus have to avoid ones with extra fucky firmware swaps.

And what about the computer? Any old laptop is capable of doing file transfers, but having enough IO to handle a 2.5 or 10G ethernet connection and a fat disk at the same time starts to become a bit of a problem. It can be done but you gotta hope your USB controller(s) behave.

Obviously, given the scenario, wifi is right out. Everyone knows which ethernet standards the switch accepts.

I'm sure there's still one person that will show up with a 12 bay xyratex complete with internal controllers reflashed to a more standard OS, along with a laptop to SSH into it. But it won't be me.
