Learning that this time I'm about 12 years behind the curve, there was a LOT of news around "Ubuntu TV" and exactly nothing came of it. Everyone really did have this idea, go through with it, say "meh" and bought a Roku instead.
Thankfully, MythTV is still actively developed.
Ubuntu TV being part of Shuttleworth's old "Ubuntu on every device" initiative and literally none of those projects came to fruition which is a shame.
