The reason this is super frustrating is, this shit is NOT cheap. $200 to $400 USD for a 4 bay NAS with no ability to ever expand it past that size? And the prices scale up pretty linearly with bay count.
TrueNAS. Just use TrueNAS. If you can build a gaming PC you can build a TrueNAS box.
I've said it incessantly before but at this point I just assume that anything running a proprietary OS/firmware is a security vulnerability and act accordingly. yes I include my smartphone and PC motherboard firmware in this. no I do not sleep well at night.
