okay nobody got hurt, thankfully. very lucky. for those who aren't in the know, an accident during the Indycar Indianapolis 500 caused a tire to dislodge from one of the cars and fly over the catchfence surrounding the track. it flew through the air and, from the camera angle i was watching, it looked like it was headed right toward the grandstands. it ended up missing the stands and hitting a Chevy Cruze in the parking lot in the gap between the turn two stands.
Indycars all have extremely strong tethers to the wheels to prevent this exact situation. the extremely wonky angle of the wreck broke those tethers. the tethers are as strong as you can make them, so nothing can really be done to fully prevent this situation from happening again. the tire was hit at exactly the wrong angle to force a freak series of interactions that broke the tethers. very terrifying situation.
tire went 6 feet over my head and cratered someone’s chevy cruze. was going through the indycar tag and found this. Not pictured was a fuckton of shrapnel going into the stands, only bruises as far as I remember. First time I been to a race where things got out of control outside the fence
EDIT: If you're a dumbass like me, please note that the two above posts are a year apart.
