Is collecting necessarily an antonym of sharing? In a functional sense. Does collecting mean you're not sharing?
I occasionally write long posts but you should assume I'm talking out of my ass until proved otherwise. I do like writing shit sometimes. ย

You can collect something and hoard it for yourself. You can also collect something and share it with friends. You can also-also share something that you only have one or two of and don't necessarily collect. These things are not mutually exclusive.
I collect a lot of things that are difficult to share in spite of how much I wish I would like to share them. But some of the things I do collect aren't necessarily things I'd share. Those, they're purely for my own hoarder enjoyment.
rich people often have collections of art that they put on display at public galleries, probably partially as a way to build their own clout. i have a small collection of neopets toys that my niece and i play with whenever she is over. so i don't think they're antithetical, even if certain collections are truly private.
but for my money most people collect objects for the express purpose of sharing them, at least in some way. my aunt was incredibly proud of her Star Trek Room and all her Brent Spiner plates, and would show them to everyone she could. Just because im not taking it home doesn't mean it wasn't shared with me, in a way.
anyway! interesting question! i had to really think about what i would reply with.
I wouldn't really say so. Last I checked, collecting and sharing don't have that much to do with each other.
if I collect a bunch of i dunno, DVDs, it'd be a waste if nobody but myself ever watched them
i've think a lot about this kooky woman in the 80s who had 4 tvs which she would obsessively record on vhs. because of her we have some of the best records of advertisements and news reports of the time. Sometimes i contemplate recording my GOG library onto some M-Discs for future archaeologists because of her.
