we grew up sheltered, with abusive parents who never had fun, so our first taste of stuff like MTV came only because of school field-trips. I remember seeing Dave Gahan walking up a hillside in a king's-robe costume, carrying a lawn chair, and it was like reading "The Lord of the Rings" for the first time—it was an introduction to a whole universe of entertainment that I'd been unaware of. it felt really profound, although...I mean, it isn't really, is it?

and now it's basically all gone. music videos aren't really a thing any more, and in any case nobody could get away with looking this cheap and bare-bones with one. I suppose this sort of thing might still get made and released to YouTube.
