and I wonder if other older Internet users have been suffering from a similar version of this.

here's the issue: I / we are old enough to have knowledge and direct experience of multiple leaps in technology for writing and communications, and that turned out to be no preparation whatever for the leap to universal personal computing. it wasn't like going from pencils to typewriters, or from radio to television; it was uniquely disorienting, and we're still reeling from the surprise of it all. really and truly. it's 2023, we've been online since 1992-3, and we're still stumbling about trying to figure out how to integrate this strange awful thing into our lives.

we still feel like it ought to be similar to sitting down at a typewriter, and it's not. it's so very very very much not like typewriting, and yet...it's roughly the same activity, right? ahaha.
