the four-element model of matter doesn't seem meaningless to me any more. it's been approximately replaced with our concept of phases of matter, but I think there's some abstract value to thinking of "earthy" or "watery" or "fiery" things outside of the obvious application, and I've been trying to tease that out.

consider, for example, that water can be used in an "earthy" manner. water is an enormously versatile substance and we are lucky to live on a planet where all three phases of water can be found somewhere in material reality—ice, liquid water, and water vapor are around us at all times, and there's some kind of magic in that circumstance, I think.

but I daresay that one can distinguish a specifically "earthy" use of water, distinct from other other uses. this is water used to support agriculture and heat transfer and human industry and other such things. "process water", you might call it. water used for many of these earthy purposes doesn't need to be the cleanest water.
