oh that's right, La Boheme is a Christmas story.

there's a particular performance that haunts us. it must have been from roundabout 1980, and Pavarotti sang the part of Rodolfo, but that doesn't really narrow it down much; I've watched a couple of recordings of La Boheme performances from roughly the correct time, but they've never seemed to be quite right; they don't quite match the memory. right now we're running a 1977 Metropolitan Opera staging. pretty sure it's not the right one but...well, might as well see it through.

someone I met in Italy in 1999 told me they thought La Boheme was, like, babby's first opera and not actually that good. this old fellow thought I ought to get into Richard Strauss. since then I've seen exactly one Richard Strauss opera (Der Rosenkavalier, and I saw it live even!) but I still like facile melodrama.

Mimi died again. I cried a little bit, but it felt fake.

there was a time once when I could cry with abandon at an opera on TV. those days are gone. that person is gone. that world is gone. everything is gone
