it's a silly complaint to have maybe, but it seems like a such a persistent issue—one that causes genuine problems in the computing community, when it comes to names like "gimp". why do programmers have such a tin ear for names?

what's especially ironic is that computer geeks probably have, as few other people have, an instinctive understanding of the magical notion that there is power in names. think about how absurdly excited all the Elon Musk cultists are for his "X" stunt—they do have a good reason, and it's because they've perceived that short punchy names are powerful in their field.

and yet they choose such inappropriate, self-defeating names for things sometimes. "git". why would you voluntarily name anything "git"? yes, Linus Torvalds is a git, but...isn't that something you ought to try to conceal rather than advertise?

or "Discord"? why would you deliberately name a communications medium after the inability to communicate? to be fair, Eris herself must be getting such a laugh out of that one, a communications medium that (a) everyone feels compelled to use even though it sucks and (b) seems to generate fights rather than mutual understanding...
