limited lifespan! cells are created with certain maximum lifespan that ticks downward, and the cell disappears when the lifespan is exhausted. otherwise it's ordinary rules. this particular animated GIF was made with the ruleset B3/S236 and lifespan of 5, which seems to like producing a "spaceship" with a a flashy exhaust.
