Hubbard was definitely the latter, and it's one of the reasons for our dubious fascination with the guy: he was indefatigable at spinning his bits and pieces of experience (however meager or embarrassing they were in reality) into a grand narrative of personal excellence and sublimity. any cheap crooked grifter knows how to do this, and yet we're terrible at it. sometimes I wish we had even a hundredth part of Hubbard's Big Shot energy...

oh, i feel that. i'm just always surprised when people don't see the idiots coming. i've found that if i was okay with cheating people like that then i could actually build a series of routines that would emulate that Big Shot energy but it turns out i can't live with myself if i successfully pull even a minor con unless it's a counter-con. lol
