i present to you:

a tree 106 acres and 47,000 'tree's big
that is all one tree, it is also 47,000 trees
they are all the same tree
and from this, i ask of you
WHAT THE FUCK ARE TREES
YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT A TREE IS AND THEN YOU LEARN A TREE CAN BE FORTY SEVEN THOUSAND TREES AT THE SAME TIME

there's a broken-down stump of what I think used to be a birch tree on our property, and the tree is still alive and has spread itself over a good fraction of the backyard's surface area because the roots have sent out "suckers"—fresh shoots coming up from the invisible root mass of the tree, which is still very much alive even if the main trunk has fallen apart—and so our yard has thousands of little birch trees coming up everywhere that are, in fact, all part of the same tree.

it might be one of the oldest living things on the property, come to think of it. ~Chara

This isn’t at all related to your main point but that Wikipedia article is badly in need of copyediting, wow. Commas and periods all over the place, occasional nonsense sentences… Don’t normally see that on an article on a topic that I’ve actually heard about.
