I think this is basically how Western society is supposed to function, at least by its current values. it works roughly like this: you're allowed to have hopes and dreams in childhood, but then comes a necessary moment (or moments) where those hopes and dreams are kicked to pieces by the Real World™, whereupon you're supposed to save up that trauma forever and use its energy to drive your Real World™ ambitions ~Chara
