I always wonder what I'd actually do if asked to design my own house, because like, I have a knee-jerk resentment towards understated minimalism and "normcore" aesthetics.
but like
wholly rejecting those things seems to be the formula for horrible ugly McMansions...so..?
a long time ago I used to think that if I could build my own house it'd be a geodesic dome, but then years later I discarded the idea—it means an immensely tedious construction job with all kinds of weird angles and fundamental difficulties, like the problem of dividing up an almost spherical house into interior rooms. I also remember being attracted by the idea of a house made with reclaimed materials, e.g. using old bottles or cans as building materials. anyway I feel like there's got to be some options for unusual house design that don't mean cobbling some Hill House monstrosity together. ~Chara
