there's a fan theory that the population of Earth is just a lot lower than it is in the real world

the fact that there appears to be a giant fucking crater centered on Siberia is often cited as evidence. between that and the fact that even historical records show that humans were familiar with the existence of gems centuries ago, it's clear that the gems have been interfering throughout human history.

Beach City has the retired leaders of a successful revolution. not that anybody really bothered to tell the humans about any of that, mind, but still, the diamonds do genuinely have good reason to prioritize it.

oh, that's an idea I hadn't considered—the notion that Earth's population is actually much smaller and perhaps contracted into many fewer areas, because we don't really get a good sense of how badly the Gem occupation and war trashed Earth, aside from a few tantalizing hints.

one thing that proximity to Gems (or at least to Gem relics) seems to have done to human beings on SU Earth is, they're a lot more chill with weirdness, although that doesn't quite explain what's going on with the Ronaldo subplot (maybe he's just badly written)

yeah, absolutely

that's a good point about Ronaldo... we hadn't thought about it before, but we think maybe he kinda just talks about things in confused ways that conflate a lot of stuff based on minimal evidence, so nobody listens to him even though they know gems are real, much like you might stop listening to somebody who loudly blames the military-industrial complex for their kids not wanting to talk to them. and then he takes it as people not believing him, so he goes all paranormal investigator and tries to get evidence and stuff?
