turns out that 7/8 of a unit is a reasonable approximation of √3/2. if i need more than 5 vertical pattern repeats i can shorten the interline spacing by 1/16th of a unit

do you have a compass? laying out 60 degree angles would be much easier with one
i do have a compass! but i am also good at compounding errors.
my constructed hexagon is better not thought about.
anyway this is the best i can do for now, and is probably close to the computer solution.
