I've given serious thought to whether marketing can be somehow made illegal, because I definitely think it's been a catastrophic force for evil in Western society and especially American culture, which is practically wall-to-wall salesmanship. Everyone's always talking like they're selling something here. But how would you actually formulate a law or a principle that forbids marketing while allowing freedom of speech? The marketers will say: "we ought to be free to tell lies about our clients" (well, they'll say it more indirectly than that.)
