Last night over my dinner my parents were blown away by the fact I'd worked a 10.5hr shift with zero breaks because QT doesn't let anyone take breaks ever. My store manager who makes a 6 figure salary is arguably more deep in the trenches than me because he has to be there Mon-Fri and has claimed to work up to 17 hour shifts

My mostly-centrist parents insisted that this must be illegal, they couldn't believe that there could be no laws ensuring a certain amount of break time. It took several minutes of googling things myself to assure them that, no, in the state of Texas anyways, there are absolutely zero breaks guarantees, and it's entirely up to your employer, with zero protections or assurances from the state in that regard. Some states do require breaks, but if you were to rank the U.S. states you'd expect to have required break time laws, Texas would be in like the lower 10. I said aloud "some states have those laws, but I wouldn't expect Texas to." And she genuinely asked in response "why do you think Texas wouldn't?" And I just said "Greg Abbott."

That dinner conversation went interesting places. Like my mom learned for the first time last night that her state governor of 9 years is paraplegic - I at least took the opportunity to tell her how he sued the people responsible for his disabling injury back in like the 70s or whatever and when he became governor he made it illegal to sue companies for that kind of thing. Hopefully that plants some sort of seed in her brain.
