when my sibling and I were kids, one of our only opportunities to be somewhere other than the parents' apartment or a schoolhouse was the supermarket—the gardens of capitalism. reams of prose have been written, I'm sure, about the insidious delights of the supermarket; The Hidden Persuaders has a chapter about them. one is meant to be dazzled by the sheer variety.

I was captivated by strange fruits and vegetables that I could only dream about eating, and kumquats stood out. a miniature citrus! so small, so orange! what were they like? only today have I found out—and with Chilean kumquats at that.

they are...interesting, when simply eaten whole. I rather like them. the combination of a quick burst of citrussy sweet and an undertow of citrussy bitterness all at once makes for a kind of snack I like; eating more than a few at a time leaves too much bitter aftertaste, so there's no question of eating them quickly. I..think I ate one too many.
