running the "Mazes and Monsters" scare movie. remember kids, fantasy is bad! it's the 1980s. it's time to throw imagination and play into the trash and get yourself a business career. ~Chara

one of the remarkable things about the experiences of Robbie, the protagonist of Mazes and Monsters played by Tom Hanks who is an extreeemely sketchy derivation of the real-life James Dallas Egbert III (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Dallas_Egbert_III) and the bullshit stories cooked up after his death, is that...this poor kid has a genuine spiritual experience, one that prompts him to apply a new sense of purpose and morality to his life, and of course it's all mixed up with unresolved guilt and the trappings of his role-playing but it's real—and the movie has no use for it. it's depicted as fatally mixing fantasy with reality, going crazy. the movie implies that what Robbie should be doing is his homework, and settling down with a nice girl, and presumably leaving his serious family and personal problems in the past like a good normie who lives only for the present.

ugh. what a weird cynical movie, and yet it has accidental magic in it. ~Chara
