...reminded us of this movie: Deal of the Century, an 1980s comedy starring Chevy Chase, Gregory Hines, and Sigourney Weaver. and directed by William Friedkin of all people. Friedkin's 1980s career arguably never lived up to the promise of their 1970s films, but Deal of the Century has its moments, especially during a big defence-industry exposition that furnishes some nightmarishly upbeat advertising for weapons:

and here's Ray Manzarek (!!) playing a weapons dealer. amusingly, Gregory Hines's character is named "Ray".

this is a rare case of a movie that I learned about because of music samples: snippets of Deal of the Century turn up in some techno piece from The Orb (ah, looked it up: it's "Towers of Dub" off "Patterns and Textures") and then some insomniac night at Caltech in 199x, I was surprised to learn where the clips came from, off some late-night movie broadcast. remember broadcast TV?

well anyway
