i feel like at least one person at bandai namco has to have suggested the idea of a katamari game with a roguelite mode (for lack of a better term) by now, right? this seems like too obvious of a route to expand the series, since short length and a lack of level variety are common complaints for most of the series. (i guess they made an endless runner for mobile phones a while back but that doesn't count)

i wouldn't want the entire game to be procedurally generated, since the handmade levels you learn the layouts of and missions and funny item placement are too central to the series to abandon. but i could really easily see an extra mode where you get endless random missions in procedurally generated levels, just to give you more to do. and then maybe you'd earn currency for a basic cosmetic shop, or you could buy little decorations to arrange on the prince's planetoid, or something

of course the big difference is that katamari doesn't have items or powerups that would make runs all that distinct from each other, unlike in a roguelite. so you'd have to do some more design work to figure out how to make runs fun and varied and keep it from feeling like endless monotonous rolling. but idk. i think there's something there, if they were ever to finally decide to make another katamari

i do wonder this too. i mean they did make like four more console/handheld games and several mobile games without him, so corporate was at least interested in trying to keep it going as an annual franchise for a while. but now that that momentum is gone it could be another series where none of the creatives who are left are brave enough to pick up that torch
