i'm liking aftermath (the new site by some former kotaku writers who are pulling a deadspin and making their own worker-owned game news blog), but i didn't realize that it was one of those sites where you can only read a few articles for free before they start bugging you to subscribe. on the one hand i get that they gotta keep the lights on somehow and the ad-based model is extremely hard to make work these days, but it feels more important than ever to have genuinely good reporting and thoughtful writing on video games that's readily available for the public to read. i don't want to live in a world where all the good shit is paywalled but SEO bait slop like the shit game rant churns out and all the outrage bait youtubers are free. how are you gonna be the sensible voice in the room if most people can't even read your take? idk
