me looking into the distance wearily sighing contemplating whether I should rebuild my website from scratch a third time
wordpress (the software) is free, and more of a "product" than a "service", so using it on my site isn't financially supporting automattic or really relying on them in any way, so I think I'll be fine...
but it does feel weird now, and it does make me 10,000 times less confident in its stability in the future
i'd probably not worry about it in your case. i'm just speaking as someone who's not already dependent on wordpress
my honest recommendation would be to use a static site generator, and then host it on some plain-jane static hosting. I'm already paying for Fastmail so that's what I'm using, but I think you could do the same with Neocities?
static site generators come in all kinds of flavors and in all kinds of languages (or even as standalone binaries), so it might not be too difficult to find one that you like. the only downside to this approach is that you don't get to have "web 2.0" features like comment sections, but I feel like that's an upside in this day and age
