ff7 rebirth coming out and people saying they like it more than ff16, the previous mainline ff game that came out literally less than a year ago, seems to have inspired people to get really defensive about 16. i keep seeing tweets that are like "yoooooo look at this epic bit from a boss fight this is PEAK FICTION, i can't believe anyone could dislike this"

and it's like, yeah, the boss fights were cool. now what about the 45 hours of miserable wizard slavery drama and bad gender politics you had to slog through to see the five or six cool-looking fights

I legit stopped playing when the game gave me a sidequest where an NPC teaches you that goblin are sentient creatures who don't deserve to be slaughtered and then 10 meters away another quest had me slaughter a bunch of goblins without a second thought. The writing in this game was such trash.

I want to say it was Abnormal Mapping that had the episode on FF16 where they pointed out how insanely boring it is that the entire story of that game is about royal lineages that can transform into these godlike beings and the only thing that's ever used for is war. Like why isn't Titan revolutionizing your country's entire agriculture system? Because all the game cares about is cool anime fights

those bits, like the rest of the game, are also really shallow as far as mechanical complexity. even if I prefer the more grounded tone of 16, it feels like an alpha build compared against rebirth's more fleshed out rpg design
