Isn't sound just another form of light, really?
. . . I'm being informed that it isn't.
I'm reminded of my favorite youtube chemist who needed a very specific wavelength of light to drive a chemical reaction, so he bought some Big Boy LEDs from alibaba and just plugged 'em directly into his power supply.
Memorable quotes include, "I just don't get it, it says it needs 30 mA, but, like, more amps is more light, right?" "They were only on for a second, but they really have gotten quite hot," and "I thought the LED would just... use... what it needs?"
Meanwhile, the comments are exploding, fruitlessly begging this man to put a current-limiting resistor in series.
simply Refusing to touch the "current" dial, leaving it cranked over all the way to the right, as it's always been
oh fuck. oh shit. i know why you have those. a bunch of street lamp LEDs are failing early due to a phosphor layer becoming delaminated which turns the light kinda purplish when it's supposed to be white. that's why they got recycled. they technically still work but not like how they should
That makes sense given the evidence you've seen. Here's the thing, though:

oh shit they're not supposed to be that way? my city put up a bunch that afaict immediately were purple upon installation, and then just... left them like that for a couple years now. Half the streets in town look like an alien abduction at the Q-Zar and I just assumed they were doing it on purpose to scare teenagers or something.
some people really like em after they break so they leave em up. i think they're cool/scary
that's phosphor degradation and it's covered by the warranty
