elon musk is currently holding a twitter space about the future of twitter, and he addressed the immediate explosion of scams where people make fake accounts impersonating brands, buy a checkmark for $8, and start directing people to websites that will take their money. his take: "If someone tries to impersonate a brand, we will get rid of them and we will keep their $8. And they can keep doing that and we will do it again."

he is literally, no exaggeration, describing a system where twitter partners with scammers to make money. scammer makes a fake account, gives twitter $8, scams a bunch of people, gets banned. twitter makes $8, scammer potentially makes thousands per person successfully scammed. and repeat! "they can keep doing that", he says! this isn't an $8 punishment, this is an $8 buy-in for scam accounts. what does twitter have to lose? integrity? lol

that scam account @ SzAt_0 was going around earlier who had set their display name to "Twitter" and bought a checkmark, and got tons of engagement before being suspended. who knows how much money they made this morning? twitter doesn't care. $8 for them! sweet! that account had also retweeted a bunch of tweets from @ TwitterBlue to seem more legit, and I sincerely couldn't tell if that one was a real brand account. for all I know, it may have been TwitterBIue with an $8 checkmark. overnight, the twitter checkmark has gone from a symbol of verification to a fucking red flag. really impressive stuff
