I am once again spending too much time on spin-gravity schemes for space ships instead of just fucking writing (or even just outlining and making notes)
Specifically, the optimal configuration seems to be using a transverse drum, orthogonal to the axis of propulsion, with compartments only on *one* side of the axis, the other being used a water counterbalance. This allows the compartment to be locked on-axis while under thrust, and spun up when inertial.
