last boost is making me think about the fact that so much of the current drum and bass meta was kicked off by LTJ Bukem, considered to be the founder of the genre of Liquid Drum and Bass.
Every dnb YouTube compilation/low poly dnb mix is inspired by LTJ Bukem without question.
(And obviously he was not the first guy to make any drum and bass, but the form that you are gonna hear on your racing game soundtracks or YouTube mixes almost directly descends from him and the artists he was inspired by, on a long enough timescale.)
Like if you listen to any of his CDs, live sets, albums, you will immediately realize “oh this is exactly what I’ve been hearing in every YouTube dnb mix, down to specific tracks sometimes”.
And the revival stuff people are making right now -is also- directly or very close to directly patterned after his styles.
his album Timeless (and particularly the main single off it, Inner City Life) was likewise hugely influential in laying the foundations for the current dominant style of drum 'n bass - but he too had been helping lead the move away from all-encompassing auditory assault to introducing more atmospheric elements in the hardcore scene of the time that'd lead to jungle (then atmospheric jungle/intelligent drum 'n bass, then jazzstep, then liquid dnb) in the following years as far back as '92
but listening to inner city life now it sounds like something that honestly could've been released this year despite being from only three years later
One of the founding members of 808 state and helped do Newbuild, which is not jungle but is utterly insane and everyone should listen to it at least once.
Then made the song Voodoo Ray, which also not jungle (it was 1988 c'mon) but is a classic. You can look that one up.
Then started the Juice Box label which has a bunch of really cool sounding proto jungle-y stuff on it. I made a post about that ages ago.
Most of those releases found their way onto 28 Gun Bad Boy, which you can buy directly from him on bandcamp still. Or just click play and give it a listen, the first track is a mini mix of some of the Juice Box era tunes and it's superb.
Here's him talking about Terminator, Timeless, and taking lots of drugs from Pump Up The Volume. Flashing lights warning. (A Guy Called Gerald is there too)
