as if waking up from a thousand-year coma why the fuck does garfield hate mondays????? he doesn't even have a job
maybe he realizes that everyone else has a job, and absorbs all of the hatred like some sort of sponge...
Maybe Garfield protects us all from Mondays, by taking our pain upon himself...
like jesus christ
The story of Garfield is the story of a creature who lives through a constant cycle of death and renewal in which every piece of his personality changes slowly bit by bit.
The New Garfield is not only canon to the true nature of Garfield, it is canon to the deeper emotional truth the series seeks to convey, about the ways in which the emotional cycles we live through disrupt our personalities and leave us changed in ways that we could never hope to predict beforehand.
Just as there is no fixed notion of the self, there is no true Garfield. The nature of Garfield is to shift constantly, like the tides. The lasagna of today will always be different from the lasagna of tomorrow.
Just as Garfield is blessed (or cursed?) to awake each day anew, we, too, must accept our temporary status as mortal.
We realize that nothing about ourselves is permanent, and we rise to the sun grateful for Garfield’s lesson to us.
Truly, this is a merciful ruler:
Always there, always shifting: Garfield is constantly risen, constantly falling.
And we, too, shall rise, and fall, along with him.
