Over the past decade and a half, twitter has become part of the public lexicon. Tweeting, retweeting, quote-tweeting, live tweeting, all that stuff. Even if people aren't on the service, they know about it and how it works, it's all over the news and talk shows and sports broadcasts.

And not even as a generic term! You don't "tweet" on other services! It's exactly what every social media company dreams of, having an identity that is so strong that it can stand up to its own popularity and maintain a draw to new users. To establish such a rock-solid brand is an unbelievable stroke of good luck.

And this idiot just threw it all away! Because of his sheer arrogance, he really, truly believes that he knows better. That he can just do it again. That he's the one carrying the service, that he knows how to make this work, that he can just sprinkle his magic Elon dust on it and makie it into a success, even better than before.

I hate this so much, in ways I can't even articulate. It's such a slap in the face to everyone who cares about doing things well, in public-facing work. Just slap a dumb logo on it, just throw out all that old shit because I want my pet name on this project now. It's that sheer dismissive arrogance of the billionaire class that just runs roughshod over the hard work of thousands. Treating this all like some silly little game you're trying to win, rather than part of the real world.

@xkeeper

it is the very embodiment of "you made this? ... ... ... i made this."

it's just done in full view of basically every person on the planet, by one of the most loathed people on it.

“dismissive arrogance” is exactly the right way to put it, and I can’t stand that attitude. it’s the “obviously I am the smartest person in the world so we’re just going to do the first thing I thought of” thing. sucks so bad.

Yeah absolutely, in all of them baffling things he's done this one has to be the most severe, I still truly don't understand what went through his head to even consider it a good idea to rebrand it
