New survey! So far we've talked about card games, visual novels, roguelikes, hidden gems, itch.io games and Touhou games. Folks have added great games in the shares and comments sections. Eventually, I'd love to start compiling some of these into some posts highlighting some lesser-known gems.

So, this time: What's your favorite 3D indie game?

Since the beginning of video games, it's always been much easier to make a 2D game with a small team than a 3D one. Even as recently as 10 years ago, I'd says the tools available for indie devs skewed much more towards 2D. But now, it finally feels like things are changing, and we've been seeing more and more 3D games come out.

I'm curious to know which ones click with you!

What's the definition of a "3D game"? I don't know! I guess we can say "games where a majority of assets are 3D models" or "games where you spend most of your time navigating a 3D space."

So...which are your favorites? Let me know in the comments!

Unsure if it necessarily counts, since it's 2D sprites in a 3D environment, but Chantelise is an all-time favorite of mine. MESS OF A GAME. CLUNKY AS HELL. DIALOGUE IS CHARMING BUT FAR TOO HAMMY AT TIMES. But it's genuinely really, really fun to work with its clunk, as long as you know it has secret treasures on every map because the game absolutely expects you to collect those to keep up with the power curve, pff. This is kind of an old game, tho, so........ BUT IT'S GOOD, SO......

Cruelty Squad! Really is an awesome example of the things you can do with indie games that would absolutely never get made by a full studio with funding.

It was also was the game that made me take godot engine seriously, and now that's my engine of choice! I haven't messed with 3D much myself though, still learning with the 2D side.

Hmmm... of recent picks, I'm'a go with Motor Town: Behind the Wheel, for now. Friend really wanted to play a GTA-like with me that wasn't GTA, and this is GTA without the GT. Low poly graphics, but not low effort nor does it follow the trend of low poly = ridiculous. It's a solid drive around and do missions game, with a dab of custom house decorating. No one except the large studios really try anything like that.

Ooooo, I had absolutely never heard of that, but it looks good. I'm always into chill remixes on previous genres.

I'm thinking of doing a round-up of hidden gems recommended by Cohost users, with little blurbs written by the people who enjoyed them. If you're interested, could you give me like a 2-3 sentence pitch on what Motor Town is, for those who haven't heard of it? I can credit you with link to your page!

Or, if you prefer, I could just use the blurb you already wrote in that comment! That was a pretty good summary as it was.

You can either reply here, or send me an Ask, or email kylelabriola@gmail.com

A little bit of wordsmithing to pare it down:

Motor Town: Behind the Wheel. It's GTA without the GT. Low poly graphics, but not low effort. It's a solid drive around and do missions game, with a dab of custom house decorating.

Think that flows a bit better, especially without bashing on other low poly games. Yes there's a ton of asset flips out there because there always will be now, but there's also many other solid low poly games out there, and some of them are zany by design rather than for the shock value. (For example, Wobbly Life is on my wishlist, and hits some of the exact same notes as Motor Town, but going in a different direction with different activities and focus. And "Pirates Bay" is on my radar as a potential SoT without the central server)

Before mojang got bought it would have been easy for me to answer Minecraft. I can't really think of another 3d game that's captured me in quite the same way that spans so many different stages of my life. Nowadays if I have to choose a favorite game I just go with what I've been enjoying recently. So Ultrakill I guess? Maybe Neon White?

Oh I have a bunch! I've been enjoying this neat puzzle game The Shape of Things which is kind of putting kind of broken things back together. It's a chill game with beautiful artwork. The in bewtween area or the rest room in the game has a changing day/night and season cycle which is so cool. I think it's nice to hang out in the 3d space and just vibe sometimes after a stressful day.

Tunic has also been fun. Great art style and atmosphere. I love foxes so was a win for me. Len's Island is a fun survival and building game that is just gorgeous and has some of the best building in indie games I've seen in awhile. Slime Rancher 2 is super fun. I love exploring a rainbow world full of cute slime friends. Haven Park is a cute indie game about a bird rebuilding a park for his grandmas. I had a bunch of fun exploring the world and it had good wholesome vibes. I just got Lil Gator Game as well but haven't played it yet but have heard nothing but good things about it. Last but not least Smushi Come Home an adorable game where you get to be a mushroom and find your way home.

Uhh, I like Yooka-Laylee and Lil Gator Game. Wait, does Ion Fury count depsite mostly using 2D assets? That too.

Tell ya one thing, I'm personally looking forward to an upcoming game called Billie Bust Up. Haven't even been able to get a demo myself, but it looks cool.

There's just so many so I'm going to narrow it down to two.
Ittle Dew 2 by Ludosity is one of my favorite games of all time and I come back to play it pretty regularly. I get the feeling that I'm going to get the itch to play it again soon. I think it's a must play for anyone who is a fan of older style Zelda games, especially Link to the Past.

If a top down perspective isn't 3D for you, then how about Receiver 2 by Wolfire Games? Would really like to see you give them an interview some time if it's possible. :eggbug: Receiver 2 is an FPS game with a focus on realistic handgun mechanics to a fault. The mechanics of the game serve to drive home the themes of the game in way that I haven't seen any other game pull off. It is my favorite indie game and could possibly be my favorite game in general.
