so yeah, i alluded to the fact that i have a few issues with Amy Rose's modern design circa Sonic Adventure 1, and after mulling it over for the day i think i have some talking points about what exactly they are. gonna put this under a cut cuz i'm fully expecting this post to be a big'un ehehe (also gonna try using embedded images for the first time, so! wish me luck)
So, as a bit of a preamble, if you've been a Sonic fan for any amount of time, or even if you've just briefly poked your head in fan discussions, you'll no doubt be aware that characters' designs have been a point of contention for decades. If you've ever heard mutterings on the web about quill length and arm colours, yeah that's what that was all about. we can be meticulous and adamant in our preferences, to an eye-rolling degree π€ It's not completely BS tho: a Sonic modder by the name of SockTiger has made many detailed analyses of several Sonic characters going over the models in past and present games, explaining how even the most minute details can bring life to these characters.
With all that in mind, however, one character who repeatedly seems to get the short end of the stick in these discussions is Amy Rose; an exclusion i find particularly baffling, not only because she's received the most drastic design change in the jump from classic to modern, but as i'm going to argue, i'd say many of her changes have been for the worse.

Here's Amy's classic design, originally drawn by Naoto Ohshima and Kazuyuki Hoshino, and her modern design, drawn by Yuji Uekawa. I've added image IDs in the alt text to compare and contrast the two. Now, before i start harshly judging this poor girl's fashion choices, i feel like it's only fair to give credit where credit is due. Modern Amy looks pretty damn good in Uekawa's artstyle; almost like it was tailored for it or something :P Take a mental note of this. I'm also a fan of how it looks in her debut game appearance, Sonic Adventure 1-though, specifically the original Dreamcast model, for as early as the Sonic Adventure DX port for the GameCube, we start to see the beginnings of some changes that i think do her a huge disservice.

Alright, enough beating around the bush; what's so bad about Amy's Modern design, anyway? For me, it really comes down to three major points:
1. the quills
Ah-ah-ah. Don't scroll away so hastily. I promise i'm going somewhere with this-hear me out for just a sec.
Part of what makes Sonic's design so ingenious is that you can tell he's a hedgehog despite looking almost nothing like his real world counterpart. This is in part because, regardless of their length, his quills read as just that; quills that jut out from the back of his head and on his back. One can easily surmise that if he were to curl into a ball, the quills would point outwards and probably hurt to touch. Amy... used to follow this brilliant design choice in her Classic look, but forgoing this with the Modern design has led to some unforeseen consequences. The bob cut look is cute, i'll give it that much; but if you didn't know what Amy looked like prior to SA1, she almost doesn't read as the same species as Sonic at all. I know this because i'm pretty sure the first time i ever saw her, i assumed she was like, a cat. Getting rid of her back quills doesn't help matters much, either. Funnily enough, the dreamcast model's low poly count sort of helped sharpen her quills and get her an inch closer to Sonic's look. But, as we see in the upscaled DX model, as well as pretty much every look moving forward, that was almost definitely just the result of hardware limitations.
2. that motherfucking dress oh my god
This is by far the biggest offence Modern Amy's design commits, to the point where i'd be willing to overlook my previous and following criticisms if this single article of clothing was changed. It sort of hit me in waves just how much i hate Modern Amy's dress; it took me seeing Classic Amy wearing Modern Amy's dress for me to realize that, oh yeah no this is just bad.

Let's just get the big one out of the way: why is Modern Amy's dress shaped like a flying saucer??? Is there like. a metal wire built into the hem of the skirt that keeps it sticking out like that? It looks incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. How does she bend down to pick something up or lift up her knees without accidentally flashing someone in her immediate vicinity? (Oh right: she doesn't-her victory animation in SA1 straight up includes a panty shot and her quickly covering it up, embarrassed. Classy, Sonic Team π)
Even beyond that, Amy's gravity-defying dress makes it so that her arms can never just rest on the side of her body; not without them egregiously clipping into her model, anyways. So she always has to hold them above the waist in a dainty little pose, or spread them out awkwardly in a 40 degree angle T-pose. And you mean to tell me carries her hammer on top of all that???? Girlie's arms must be EXHAUSTED
There's also always this weird little crinkle at the waistline. It's just a small thing that bugs me personally, but it just adds onto the layers of discomfort looking at the dress gives me. Oh, and while i'm here, don't think for a second that i didn't notice that you made Amy's waist thinner between the dreamcast and gamecube models. Fuck you guys. I was gonna end this off on a positive note praising the dress' texture in the dreamcast version, but nah. Why should i? Y'all didn't keep that either.
3. the boots
(if it wasn't 1:00AM at the time of writing this, i'd throw in a "are you wearing the" "the chanel boots? yeah i am" meme edit. ah well this post has already gone on longer than i would've liked)
My issues with Modern Amy's boots are largely watered down versions of my issues with the dress. They look weirdly small and tight on her feet (something else that wasn't an issue in the dreamcast version but DX fucked up). The height and the heels look,,, okay, if she's going out or something, but when she's running around smashing badniks with Sonic and co., i can't help but see her falling over her big ass shoes. The running shoes were arguably the best part of Amy's Classic design-they told you that she's willing to at least try to catch up with Sonic, and gave her a more sporty and tomboyish vibe. Those damn crinkles are there again. Stuff like this can work in say, the original Uekawa artstyle that's super exaggerated and cartoony, or in the comics and 2D animations, where you have more freedom in expressing fluidity and motion. But as soon as you bring Amy into the 3rd dimension, she starts to become more rigid and stiff, almost like a doll.
alright, smart gal, how would you fix Modern Amy's design then??
Well i'm glad you asked, dear reader. Thanks for listening to me rant for this long, by the way. You're a real one. I gave three major complaints, so i figured i'll try to offer three possible solutions.
option A: go back to her roots
Now, admittedly this route seems the least likely (well, save for one thing i'll get to at the end), but then again, i was pleasantly surprised to see they brought back Classic Amy for the 2D games at all. If they're willing to do that, then i mean, why not give Modern Amy her Classic look for a bit. Just spice things up, y'know? Maybe even pull her hair back into more of a ponytail that conveys those quills more easily. Just spitballing here.
option B: the SockTiger approach
Oh, you thought he was just a passing mention, huh? Nah, Sock is the GOAT, he's what inspired me to make this entire post in the first place. He did make an analysis thread on Amy's model in Sonic Frontiers, comparing it to what he, and I, believe to be the gold standard for not just Amy's but pretty much all of the Sonic character models: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

Before i go into detail about how this is. BASICALLY AN UPGRADE TO HER MODERN LOOK IN EVERY POSSIBLE SENSE, Sock does have some words of his own to say about Amy's design that i definitely recommend checking out in the thread linked above. While he does end up being far more forgiving towards all of the parts of her outfit i lambasted, we both reach a similar conclusion that it does look, at the very least, awkward at times. This is where i think the Olympic outfit succeeds where the Modern one fails. Just take a look at the dress. You can see that her body looks way more relaxed now that her arms have some more breathing room: and i don't even think that was an intentional decision on the designers' part! Just a subconscious side effect of giving her a more breathable fit.

also THE SKIRT NO LONGER DEFIES THE LAWS OF GRAVITY, YIPPEE!!! π₯³π₯³π₯³ Also, i shouldn't even be giving kudos for this, but thank you for showing some maturity and giving my girl some spats. What i will unabashedly praise, though, is going back and giving her running shoes-they're even still sorta stylized like her boots, look at that! And the wristbands too omg! I didn't even have any qualms with the gold bracelets, but these really do help tie the whole outfit together in giving her that athletic look. I don't necessarily think she has to wear this all the time; i'm aware she's not as speedy as Sonic. But like i said with her Classic design, it's nice to show that she's willing to try for him. And even beyond that, if she's going to be a playable character more often now, then i really think she could stand to gain a change of clothes that look as movable and nonrestrictive as these ones.
option C: don't make it weird-lose the dress altogether
okay this one's just. Never gonna happen. I am a realist. But it doesn't mean we cannot nor should not acknowledge the double standards of having Amy be more modestly dressed while the rest of team Sonic runs around more or less naked, as well as the implication that she has more to cover up simply by virtue of being female ππ I'm not the first person on cohost to bring this up, and i hope i'm not the last. It's a topic worth discussing, well beyond the context of Sonic or any fictional characters.
But okay, let's get back down to earth, here. If you must have Amy wear something, there's a plethora of options at your disposal, Sonic Team. You've given her shorts, as we just saw. Hell, you gave her rockin' sweatpants in Sonic Riders. Don't be afraid to get more creative with it. What's wrong with just a T-shirt and jeans? A comfy sweater and some yoga pants? A tube top with a miniskirt could be fun, just. Anything.
Hell.
I really didn't wanna go here, but.
Sonic Boom Amy has a more pleasant design than Modern Amy

....Okay. I think i need to wrap this post up and lie down for a bit. That's the second time in over 24 hours i've mildly praised Sonic Boom for something. If this keeps up, i fear i may fall ill. Thank you to anyone who gave my insane ramblings so much as a passing glance, and to those of you who read everything from start to finish, you have my deepest appreciation.
EDIT: OH YEAH!! Go give @SockTiger some love too! He was such an inspiration to me throughout the entirety of this post, not to mention his insane work on modding Sonic Frontiers!!! I am absolutely over the moon that he's gonna be modding in Amy's Olympic model (alongside everyone else's) both for the main story and her playable sections in the Final Horizon, to the extent that i'll most definitely be starting a fresh save file the minute he's done with everything. Definitely check out his writing and work if you liked mine :D
