despite my best efforts discourse has leaked onto my timeline and the only thing i will say is: it's very strange how many people have a perception of youtube that seems to be frozen in 2007? i just saw this bizarre comment that "youtube has always been the gutter of the internet" and like, that's just false? whatever if you don't watch youtube videos, i don't care, but don't act like you know what kind of stuff gets posted there when you obviously have no idea what you're talking about?

it's very similar to the people who act like there couldn't possibly be anything good on tiktok, because obviously the entire medium is inherently flawed because of reasons i read in an article three years ago and all the people who like it are mindless drones incapable of experiencing the complex interior life that i, an enlightened 35 year old, have

I love youtube and tiktok but I think general dislike of the platforms goes along with people 'not being good at computers', like I know people complaining about the ads and it's incredibly easy to block with basic know how. They don't have to live like this! Block creators you don't like, you'll stop seeing right wing swill really quickly!

that's definitely part of it and like this was a big thing when i was on mastodon and would see people post stuff. there's a large contingent of people who seem to believe that all media should exclusively contain things that they are interested in and want to see and that they should never have to take any actions to improve or curate their experience and it's just so solipsistic and bizarre. it drove me crazy with mastodon because people would complain about there being right wing freaks on the fediverse, which is bad, but then they would decide to return to the website they were already using which also was full of right wing freaks but gave them fewer tools to cut them out of their experience??

but the stuff i've been seeing the past couple days on here comes more from a very boomer coded place of just like, refusing on principle to engage with youth culture because they see themselves as above it, and like it's fine to not do stuff you don't like, but the real issue comes when you both refuse to engage and decide that you're somehow still an expert on something you've never engaged with purely on vibes
