dude was a real one. hard to think of one person who had a bigger impact on the music that i love, even if he hated taking credit for that impact. just an unreal level of dedication to his craft. whether it's pixies surfer rosa or nirvana's in utero or the jesus lizard's goat or the breeders pod or joanna newsom's ys or low's things we lost in the fire or godspeed you! black emperor's yanqui u.x.o. or any of his music with big black or shellac or any of the countless other albums he engineered you've probably heard and loved something he worked on.

i've been influenced by so much of his work and so many things i've heard him say but the one that always sticks with me is this.

"I think of music as something that I’m willing to work 40 hours a week or more to support, like a wife and family, right? Music to me is that important. It’s so important that I don’t expect it to make a living for me. I expect that I will have to work a normal, regular job like a regular person in order to have the luxury of being able to play music [...] It never seems like an obligation, it never seems like it’s any pressure whatsoever. It’s just a pure, pure joy, you know?"
