one of irc's benefits was that someone posting an image or a link or whatever only took up one, maybe two lines, if you had a bot for previewing the link.

meanwhile, on discord: one person posts a meme and a youtube video link and the entire chat window taken up by it, suffocating whatever discussion was going on before.

And sometimes you click on the preview and it's a fucking jpg with a play button on it not an embedded video

Rich inline media is one of the biggest advantages of Discord over IRC, as far as I'm concerned. I don't want to have to context-switch to a new program and window just to have to look at someone's funny meme.
