the most cursed unity coding trick that i keep doing with FISH FEAR ME is the stunning fact that you don't need to instantiate prefabs in order to use their values. in order to get fish information for the game's bestiary (there's a bestiary btw), i'm referencing a non-extant prefab which contains a list of every fish prefab, and then trawling those non-extant prefabs for information like its sprite, name, and spawning conditions

Huh, I never really thought of that a feature so much as just like, the un-instantiated prefab is a data object. It's basically just using a prefab as a scriptable object.

I wish unity weren't shitting the bed as a company, I spent so long learning its eccentricities that they seem second nature at this point and it's hard to move to another engine people will actually pay me to code for -_-;
