i have a question about mixing! when i pan my tracks, the peak volume usually increases by 1-3 dB. to maintain gain staging, i've been throwing a gain plugin onto each affected track and reducing its gain by the same amount it went up. is this the best practice in this scenario? my understanding is that i want the signal to hit the return tracks roughly somewhere between -15 and -18 dB

in reply to @purrgesterone's post:

the main reason is due to "pan law"

it can vary somewhat because some panning tools automatically compensate for these issues, while many take a naive approach and leave it for you to figure out

Dan Worrall does a ton of really helpful videos on mixing, mastering, and sound design, they are my go-to reference for any topic he's covered

Dan has worked for several audio plugin companies to do tutorials for them, but i would not ignore those videos! they often cover really interesting ideas related to the plugin that are applicable anywhere

i would provide a summary here, but my brain can barely function today!

hopefully some of that helps!
