i do find it fairly user-friendly while also being deep! it's possible you might be thinking of the session view (the photo is showing the arrangement view). that's the one that's arranged more vertically and has slots for a bunch of clips on each track. i think that's possibly where ableton gets its reputation for being a little conceptually odd, since you can kind of make sketches there and then transfer them to the arrangement c:
