up until now, i had only done duties in a party with my friends, because i was scared of teaming up with randos.

it started out with me in a panic attack because cure ii was, for some reason, "not learned yet". it took me a few moments to figure out that the dungeon had level synced the duty below the level that you learn cure ii, so it simply would not let me cast it. (for some reason, it doesn't just cast cure i instead.)

THANKFULLY, i had just added cure i back to my crossbar like RIGHT before i went into this duty, so i didn't have to panickedly rip through menus to add it back in. (i had added it to an awkward place, but it was better than nothing.)

the one time i sent a chat message (to let people know what happened), i didn't send it in party chat (i don't know why this isn't default? did i change it?), so i'm not sure if my teammates saw it.

also, because i was watching cutscenes, i didn't get to give commendations :( but i did get 2! somehow! why!!! (was it because i took the time to cast aero on the bosses?)

anyway, i panicked, and i wish i knew my skills other than cure better, but it was fun, i guess. i hope next time will be a more fluid experience. hopefully i can find some recommendations online on how to best lay out the crossbar (i play on controller) for WHM so that skills are in an optimal place. but i'm sure that's just personal preference anyway for a lot of people anyway... still, would love to see how people do it. i wonder if there's like a place where people post that sort of thing.

For years I have been saying SE should just make cure II an upgrade of cure (And lose the whole "freecast" bonus it has as it makes players think it's an actual combo they should do.

Sure thing!

So, what I consider for making crossbars is:

  • I'm using some skills all the time and others only sometimes, the latter usually being anything that comes with a cooldown. The former ones are your basic attack skills and low-cooldown things you use a lot. Naturally, I want the bread and butter skills to be somewhere that's comfortable for me to use while moving (well, as a caster you're not going to be moving as much but you still want it to be comfortable to start moving when using your basic skills). For me, this means I put those basic skills on the R-shoulder button and on the symbols buttons as much as possible (this being a dualshock 4 controller, not sure what you're using if you're on pc?). Putting them there makes it easiest for me to also use the left stick for movement.

  • If you want to use skills in rapid succession, it's usually a good idea to put them all on one side of your bar so you don't have to switch back and forth in a hurry. This is more relevant to DPS though.

  • Sixteen slots aren't enough to hold all skills you get for any class, so you need a way to extend into multiple bars without getting confused on what's where. This isn't extremely relevant to you yet since you're level 30-ish or so, judging by you having Cure 2? If you want, I can go into options to make this happen, but I don't want to bash you over the head with info you won't be using for a while yet haha

  • The way the game automatically arranges skills as you initially gain them stuck with me to an extent, so my bars are influenced by that. YMMV.

On WHM, I have my attack skills (Stone, Aero, Holy (you probably don't have Holy yet)) on R-shoulder symbols, then the non-cooldown heals like Medica and Cure on R-shoulder directional buttons.

great job! usually when i'm running a dungeon as a non-healer (i main WHM), i commend the party healer, just because i know how hard it can be. another reason for the commendations might be because the party saw you were in cutscenes and assumed you were new and therefore wanted you to have a positive experience!
