Since people had some discussion around some of the influencer paid/unpaid stuff, I thought I would paste this hot offer I got via email to produce sponsored/ad content for a game. Note the part near the bottom that sneaks in "Please note this will be an unpaid activation."

I may have pasted something from this company before, sorry if this is a repeat but I get like three emails a week from this company and they're all pretty similar. If you like a good time, try to find people on YouTube or Twitch who took this deal for zero dollars and... well, I mean, don't harass them or whatever, but god, this seems stupid. Every time one comes in it takes a lot of energy for me to not hit reply all and say ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME YOU'RE ASKING TO INSERT A CHATBOT INTO MY CHANNEL SO YOU CAN PROMOTE THIS GAME AND YOU'RE EXPECTING ME TO CREATE HOURS OF CONTENT IN YOUR VERY SPECIFIC WAY AND YOU AREN'T EVEN BOTHERING TO OFFER ANY MONEY? I mean I don't even do endemic sponsorships in the first place and don't really have a format that fits their rigid guidelines, but this just is gross. It feels like an attempt to take advantage of naive streamers out there who are more than happy to undersell themselves.

Like just send codes. At this point, just treat these people like the press and send a code for the game. If they had just said "hey, here's Zenless Zone Zero in case you want to cover it" and left the rest up to me I probably would have redeemed the code and at least fired it up to see if it's something I want to cover. But by approaching this like it's an ad deal where the upside for me is "well I guess you get to stream an unreleased game even though you do that pretty frequently" I don't really want anything to do with it.

Like many scams, it's self selecting. The kind of person who would bite down on an offer like this is the exact kind of person who is least likely to produce content they'd have to worry isn't fully in the spirit of this [shudders]... activation. All while pushing the expectation of what promotional content looks like to the next generation of creators.

UNPAID for a fuckin Hoyoverse game lmaooooooo

I got contacted about a Very Similar Project like a month or two ago and for some reason the marketing firm wouldn't even tell me the name of the game I had to pry it out with clues like the world's shittiest trivia game. It was paid, which is nice, but they wanted full key art done with a week deadline from when I get the email and I was losing my mind like.... do you think the world stops on a dime for you guys? What?? Good key art takes me a month at minimum like i'm 30 i have a wife and responsibilities and shit

a non zero amount of these people yelling and hollering about how content creators deserve money from devs were the exact same people screaming about collusion in games journalism 9 years ago if people dared to get a free code for their text reviews. it leaves the dirtiest taste in my mouth. its so nasty on both sides with people acting like wasting your time on an unfinished game is a GIFT FROM GOD

its youtube and twitch that should be fuckin paying more

wasnt this all started by mike rose anyway? someone who spent basically his whole career publicizing indie games. im so old, this is all so tiring at this point

its youtube and twitch that should be fuckin paying more

this right here, thanks for saying it. we're apparently stuck with their rotten ass empires and all the weird incentives and creator precarity they create. maybe not the absolute worst timeline but it's up there.

what's extremely scummy is that this is fucking mihoyo of all companies, the people who made literal billions off genshin impact

i'm sure they can afford just a teensy bit of budget for a paid campaign

I love Hoyo games, but this is real scummy. Now I'm even more convinced that their entire budget for ads goes to those same two YouTube ads you see before every single video.

Even Raid Shadow Legends offers $500 and bonuses for a very similar thing like this. And that Raid! People hate that game.

By all accounts Raid is very willing to pour good money to sponsorships big and small, somehow they've worked that into their business model. I'm sure that's not a good thing ultimately but streamers love it.

The willingness to not take endemic ads is unfortunately pretty rare these days. I’m saddened by seeing some of my favorite people get big but at the expense of their credibility. I know the ad market can get rough, but it stings to see some folks lose their way and I’m not sure if there is a nice way to talk about it from the audience.
