you know what, thank fucking god. I actually enjoyed Elden Ring a lot but after a decade of that style of combat, I need a break and I can only imagine the staff getting exhausted by it too.

also just generally, variety ain't bad and everyone who likes FromSoft's ARPGs, y'all have had a decade and 5-6 games for that. Let the rest of us get something seriously. Let the studio that used to put out a ton of niche stuff put out something that isn't just what they've been doing for a decade

the weird mission branching, controls, obscene customization, maybe you'll enjoy it too

I played about 10 missions of the first game over the weekend and really enjoyed it! It took some patience like any PS1 game but it's very easy to see the mechanics could be updated to the present day. To me it seems less janky than their early RPGs. I'm excited to try 4 and 5 now that they've come in the mail.

Also something that tickled me in the IGN interview was the point that they're going back to a focus on single player after 5 was multiplayer based. Glad to see they can just do that in the "games as a service" era.

the AC game I have the most fondness for is For Answer, I've played a good amount of 4 and liked it but its UI was terrible by comparison and it has some real drags of missions. 5 is an interesting game that is in a lot of ways trying to recapture the magic of Chromehounds and never quite got there
