well I've finished Legend of the Galactic Heroes (thank you @FreyjaKatra) and will now be insufferable about it because it is easily one of my favorite things I've ever experienced. I am also exhausted because 95% of the show is just tension about how will things go horribly wrong. They do, it's a tragedy and it's very up front about it.

anyways there's nothing like it out there, it's beautiful, heartbreaking, and does not feel its length beyond "oh no, we hit another big tragedy and there are how many episodes left?"

unironically one of my favorite parts of the show is one of the most talented imperial admirals being the biggest wife guy to the point some very important people take note. seriously Mittermeyer and his whole thing is great though I still like Yang and Frederica's thing a lot

also my final hot take seeing the finale is that Legend of the Galactic Heroes has way more in common with Symphogear than its presentation would make you thing. They are both massively intense shows with extreme focus on their themes and will keep pulling at them long after you would expect them to run out of material. And they are hopeful. Both shows are about so much tragedy and suffering, at scales of all kinds, but never completely let that little flame of hope die out.

Both are also some of the most audacious things in existence, just a group of people being massively on their bullshit for as long as they can. It's beautiful and I recommend them both wholeheartedly

I'm going to echo grumpy old man Miyazaki for a minute because while I do think it's important to know the medium(s) you work and create in, you need other experiences to make things yours. Otherwise you will be mostly doing reproduction. There is nothing wrong with reproduction, it's a great way to learn, but if you want your own voice as a creative, you need to branch out beyond your medium.

I have most of my experience in writing and programming, though I hang around animators enough to have picked up some of the language. And what I am about to say is useful across all these different disciplines. Pay attention to the real world and what is around you (real here meaning things that are not fiction, the internet is real).

Art is abstraction and you can be much more deliberate with your abstraction if you have a sense for our reality and the people and things in it.

If you are writing dialogue, study how people speak in everyday conversation. If you are modeling character interaction, study how people act near each other, look at what people in different fields think about it. Limiting your references is limiting your creativity.

Let your mind wander in the shower and form those galaxy brain connections
