Changes like the ones you describe to games can often feel sorrowful and senseless, and especially with large companies I often wonder if the people making the changes are even aware of the reasons things were different before. Are they the same people who made the decisions originally? Are they in communication with the people who made the earlier design decisions? In most cases we'll probably never know.
