I have so many thoughts about non-normative bodies and finding/building solidarity among outcasts in this !Vorkosigan world...I have tentatively decided this is a romance novel and then a series of novellas about other characters and how their lives are affected by Sasha bringing home Jaz and being like "Anyway this is my fiance."
Besides Sasha (disabled little person) and Jaz (aggressively non-binary third gender immigrant to a binarist culture), there is also
-Yakov (bisexual whose lack of attraction to one of the two acknowledged genders in his culture means he didn't notice this for several decades)
-Daniil (fat genderfluid trans woman)
-Nikolai (clone of Sasha who is less disabled but has uhh more medical trauma from the procedures required to make him look like Sasha)
-Ras (unaltered clone who fits in better with normative society but feels very out-of-place among his peers)
-Anissa (clone who was pretty obviously intended as a living sex toy)
-Bu Lin (clone + probable outcome of other genetic engineering whose normativity is the direct reason he is alive while his two brothers are dead)
-Zetta (product of a super-soldier experiment who was effectively given a bootleg gender)
-Maria (clocky middle-aged trans woman who used to be a champion brawler, which is how she gets away with being a clocky trans woman in a cissexist patriarchy [Jaz meets her in the middle of kicking a bigot's ass])
-Maksim (faggy pansexual who was outed by his own mannerisms before he even had a chance to learn how to be closeted)
-Helen (tall buff woman who failed at Kavagoran femininity so hard everyone assumes she is a lesbian)
-Yuri (ugly lowest-possible-class man who spent thirty years repressing the largest parts of his sexuality instead of going to therapy)
There's also, like, plenty of people being stealth or closeted for political/survival reasons, but it's not tangled up so heavily in their physical bodies so they are not on the list (such as Emperor Viktor, who is definitely bi/pan but can't be open about it)
Like, obviously this is heavily influenced by me lifting the setting from the Vorkosigan Saga, but like. I'm doing it more on purpose than LMB, I think.
