my rewatch of Utena as research for a thing finally brought me to Adolescence of Utena, and like, it's gorgeous and perfectly obviously. but also I think literally every artist in the world should be similarly blessed with the opportunity to do a big budget revisiting of their masterpiece but this time they have to explain zero of the plot points because they were already explained in the more literal version of the story and can instead just fully commit to showing the most gorgeous music video of alternate imagery of the feelings that went into it. just tell the story again but this time purely in the realm of emotion and metaphor. can you imagine how lucky you'd have to be to get to do that

I was just thinking about this phenomenon on account of Toby Fox announcing a collaboration with ZUN on an upcoming song. Like, if I was writing fanfiction about real people that's what I'd come up with for him. Adolesence of Utena feels like that.
This is why I was so disappointed to learn the Penguindrum movies are not in fact this, but compilation movies.
I think along the lines of this is the way the Evangelion Rebuilds got to revisit the same ideas but with the maturity of having changed so much as a creator and thought about things differently in the large gap of time intervening. THAT'S what I was hoping the Penguindrum movies would be... which is really too bad.
Yeah. I was like the whole time "Wow he is going back to that?? I wonder what motivated him to return and redo" and then it was just ehh. I wonder if the crowdfunding aspect was part of it or not...
