from Fat Choi Spirit, a wonderful Johnnie To film i watched today about mahjong. it has a sports anime feel to it- good messages about playing for the love of the game, hanging out with your buddies and family, and enjoying the thrills and fortune instead of chasing wins or titles. it's also really funny and has great costume design.
it's about Hong Kong mahjong so slightly different from riichi but it's mostly the same. most interestingly there's no furiten. also no yaku requirement to finish a hand. The tiles are also a bit bigger, they look really satisfying to handle. Due to the size the walls are built diagonally coming out from the center of the table in a pinwheel shape.. just really interesting to see the differences!!
i highly recommend the film to anyone interested in mahjong or comedy movies~
