In what is being called the largest U.S. public sector union victory in 25 years, the Fairfax Education Unions—an alliance between the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers and the Fairfax Education Association—has just successfully unionized more than 27,000 workers!
According to the American Federation of Teachers:
FEU successfully organized two bargaining units comprising educators and support staff. They overwhelmingly won the two one-week votes, announced today, by a combined 9 to 1 margin—with 97 percent voting yes in the instructional unit and 81 percent in the operational unit.
This win is very significant because it is estimated that only around 175,000 workers in Virginia are unionized; this means that, singlehandedly, this election should increase that coverage by around 15% (assuming these workers are not already reflected in BLS statistics).
